Kill Spam Dead — With These 3 Tools
Preston Gralla, Contributing Columnist, ZDNet

Everyone complains abut spam, but few do anything to stop it. And so your e-mail box is full of scams, phony work-at-home offers, and pornographic panderings.

If you're tired of all the junk, don't despair--fight back. ZDNet Downloads has lots of tools that can aid your campaign against spam. Here are three good ones I've come across--and they're all free.

SpamNet is a unique download from one of the Napster developers that uses peer-to-peer technology to combat junk e-mail. It works as an add-in to Outlook 2000/XP. Everyone using the program flags what they consider spam, and then based on their opinions, spam is identified and killed at each computer. My colleague David Coursey likes it, too. It's still in beta, and some people have reported problems with it, but it's worth a try. (Free/Windows 2000/XP) E-Mail Remover lets you preview e-mail headers from any POP3 account while the messages are still on the server. If a message is spam, you can delete it before taking the time to download the e-mail to your computer. You can also use the program to launch your full e-mail client. (Free/Windows)

Spam Weasel is for POP3 e-mail accounts. It uses a series of rules to determine what's spam and, when it finds a junk message, deletes it. You can customize the program's rules yourself to make for more effective spam-fighting. (Free/Windows)

Don't let spammers get the best of you. Try these three free spam-fighters, and say hello to a cleaner mailbox.
